A single specimen of the non-indigenous species G. reticularis was recently recorded off the coast of Israel (Stern and Goren 2013 ). Gymnothorax unicolor has been also recorded in the eastern Atlantic, at Cape Verde, the Canary Islands, Madeira, the Azores, Morocco, and southern Portugal.
The etymology of “gymnothorax” comes from the Greek “gymnos” = naked and from the Latin “thorax” = thorax. It is, finally, a fish with bare thorax, seen that it has no scales. The name of the species “ unicolor ” = with only one colour, in Latin, refers to the livery substantially brown without any drawing.
On 24 August 2014, one specimen of G. unicolor was observed during a scuba dive at Cefalù (southern Tyrrhenian Sea), within a cleft of a big rock extending from a 27 m deep sandy bottom vertically up to 9 m from the surface, on the shoal Secca dei Campanari (38.026994°N, 14.125850°E). The water temperature was 26 °C.
