    What is a clinging jellyfish?
    Gonionemus vertens (Clinging Jellyfish) is a hydrozoan with a small, solitary polyp, but a conspicuous medusa stage. The polyp is rounded, with a conical hypostome and 4 to 6 tentacles. The base of the polyp lacks hydrorhizae (rootlets, for attachment). The polyp is often embedded in detritus, or clinging to the substrate with its tentacles.

    Clinging jellyfish ( Gonionemus vertens) have been spotted at the Jersey shore in 2016. A native of the Pacific Ocean, this dime-sized jellyfish species was accidentally introduced to Atlantic coastal waters in Massachusetts in the late 1800s.

    Gonionemus vertens, the clinging jellyfish, is a small species of hydrozoan in the family Olindiidae found in coastal regions throughout large parts of the Northern Hemisphere. The appearance of Gonionemus vertens is usually described as having a transparent bell lined with 60–80 (exceptionally up to 100–110) tentacles.
