    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to

    • A hole in the colon (perforated colon)
    • Severe dehydration
    • Bone loss (osteoporosis)
    • An increased risk of colon cancer
    • Toxic megacolon (acute form of colonic distension)
    • Increased risk of clotting in blood vessels
