    The Pincushion Urchin has an oval to round body covered with hundreds of uniform spines. Its color can range from red to purple to white and blue. It requires ample hiding places and sufficient room in which to forage in the home aquarium. It generally hides in caves during the day, though it may make a burrow in thick substrates.

While the pincushion is sometimes known by the common name “green sea urchin,” and can indeed be green, it also occurs with pink, red, reddish purple, bluish purple or gray spines over a pale body.
    In some years it can be abundant while in other years quite rare. The Pin-cushion Urchin has a brown or purple test (body), short white spines sometimes tipped with orange, and brownish-red tube feet. Pin-cushion Urchins live in intertidal areas and coastal waters to a depth of 75 m.
    The pincushion urchin comes from the Western Atlantic Ocean, where it occupies seagrass meadows and other soft-bottom habitats.
