The genus Achelous formed a clade of 21 species, nine of them from the eastern Pacific. All of them are labeled as Achelous in Figure 1. The eastern Pacific species are A. acuminatus, A. affinis, A. brevimanus, A. iridescens, A. minimus, A. panamensis, A. stanfordi, A. tuberculatus, and A. xantusii.
Achelous angustus is endemic to the Galapagos Islands and is closely related to A. brevimanus ( Rathbun, 1930: 70, fig. 12). It exhibits alternately large and small anterolateral teeth as in Cronius ( Rathbun, 1930: 70).
These subdivisions will likely warrant revisions, as they do not appear to adequately reflect evolutionary affinities. According to our results, Achelous comprises 21 recognized species in the Americas alone.
In accordance with previous literature using morphological characteristics ( Rathbun, 1930; Garth & Stephenson, 1966; Stephenson, 1972 ), our findings support the conclusion that members of Portunus and Achelous from the Indo-West Pacific are a problematic taxonomical group.
