In previous work, our group has described the genomic structure of Ig in different vertebrates (Estevez et al., 2016, Gambón-Deza et al., 2009, Gambón-Deza et al., 2010). While studying Ig genes found in Teleostei genomes, it was surprising that Gouania willdenowi, a member of this Infraclass, did not possess genes for Ig.
Within the Gobiesocidae, this applies in particular to the genus Gouania Risso 1810, which originally included only the species Gouania willdenowi.
In particular, G. willdenowi is a member of the family Gobiesocidae (clingfishes). Clingfishes are characterized by small size, flattened body, reduced swim bladder, and a ventral adhesive disc that allows them to join surfaces (Briggs, 1955 ). They belong to the Ovalentaria clade of teleosts.
There is not sufficient evidence to determine whether the loss of this receptor in G. willdenowi is correlated with the loss of IG genes. In other species lacking essential immune system elements, compensatory mechanisms have been found.
