Pholoe inornata isone of two Pholoe species that is easily identified and is unambiguously distinguished from its congeners by the distinct spine-like papillae along the tentacular cirri ( Table 4 ).
Pholoe inornata is easily and unambiguously identified by thepresence of up to seven robust spine-like papillae on dorsal and ventral tentacular cirri ( Fig. 4A, B ), usually arranged in an irregular row on the inner side. Also, the orange pigment often present on the ceratophore of the median antenna is distinct ( Fig. 4C ).
Moreover, P. inornata is characterized by theabsence of lateral antennae and the absence of the facial tubercle, the latter being present in most other Pholoe spp. from coastal European waters, except P. assimilis.
Pholoe inornata can be distinguished from P. assimilis by thesingle row of teeth on the blades of compound neurochaetae ( Fig. 4F) opposed to two and more rows of teeth in P. assimilis ( Fig. 2G, H ). The parapodial papillae are differently distributed in the two species ( Fig. 7 ).
