Argyropelecus gigas, the giant hatchetfish or greater silver hatchetfish, is a marine fish of the genus Argyropelecus. It is found in every ocean except the north Pacific in the mesopelagic zone of tropical and subtropical waters.
The hatchetfish, known to science as Argyropelecus gigas, gets its name from the distinct hatchet-like shape of its body. Hatchetfishes live in the deep ocean at depths down to 4500 feet. They are a small fish growing up to only 4 inches in length.
Argyropelecus is an oceanic ray-finned fish genus in the deep sea hatchetfish family Sternoptychidae. A collective name is "silver hatchetfishes", but this can also refer to a species of the freshwater hatchetfishes which are not particularly closely related to this.
Argyropelecus hemigymnus, A. sladeni, Sternoptyx diaphana, and S. pseudobscura were also found in a relatively broad latitudinal range, but highest values of abundance were located at the east side of Fernando de Noronha. Sternoptyx pseudodiaphana and V. tripunctulatus were only captured off Fernando de Noronha and Rocas Atoll.
