    Asellus aquaticus is a freshwater crustacean resembling a woodlouse. It is known by various common names including pond slater, water louse, aquatic sowbug, water hoglouse and cress bug . Asellus aquaticus is common throughout the temperate zone, including Europe and Russia.
    Here, we introduce the freshwater isopod Asellus aquaticus, a keystone species and an emerging invertebrate model system, as a prime candidate to address fundamental questions in ecology and evolution, and the interfaces therein.
    In particular, the isopod species, Asellus aquaticus (Fig. 1), has been identified as a potential biomonitor, due to its greater tolerance for metal pollution (Whitehurst, 1991) and its wide range, which has not been greatly affected by human impact (Verovnik et al., 2005).
    Asellus aquaticus is a freshwater isopod. Widely distributed throughout much of Europe and North America, commonly associated with a temperate climate, it has been recorded as far south as the Mediterranean, and as far north as Scandinavia (Maltby, 1991).
