Candeina nitida Author d’Orbigny, 1839 Edit 1 Taxonomy Kingdom Protozoa Phylum Granuloreticulosa Class Foraminifera Order Globigerinida Family Candeinidae Genus Candeina Species nitida Overall Geographic Range North Subtropical to South Subtropical
The genus is paraphyletic, giving rise to Candeina. Three extant species. The original description of the species by Egger (1893) is sufficiently detailed to confirm that the name refers to a microperforate species (Egger specifically highlighted the felt-like surface of the shell) with a morphology consistent with its modern representatives.
No types exist for C. nitida, G. glutinata and G. radians. The original material on which the species descriptions were based is in all cases considered lost. However, the localities of the original material can be narrowed down to specific regions, and all species were said to originate from recent sediments.
Data source: Candeina is thought to have evolved from Globigerinita (Hofker 1954, Parker 1962), although this s questioned by Pearson et al. (2018). Geological Range: Last occurrence (top)Extant. Data source: Total of ranges of the species in this database First occurrence (base)N17b zone (5.72-6.6Ma, base in Messinian stage).
