Cuban naturalist Felipe Poey originally described the oceanic whitetip shark as Squalus longimanus in 1861, followed by a name change to Pterolamiops longimanus and then to the currently valid name of Carcharhinus longimanus. The genus name Carcharhinus is derived from the Greek “karcharos” = sharpen and “rhinos” = nose.
Carcharhinus longimanus This large shark is readily recognized by its long white-tipped paddle-like pectoral fins and rounded first dorsal fin (Compagno et al. 2005). Solitary and slow moving, it prefers the upper layers of deep-water areas, where it is an opportunistic hunter (Baum et al. 2015).
    C. longimanus ' most distinguishing characteristics are its long, wing-like pectoral and dorsal fins. The fins are significantly larger than most other shark species, and are conspicuously rounded. The shark's snout is rounded and its eyes are circular, with nictitating membranes. The oceanic whitetip shark is a robust, large-bodied shark.
Etymology: Carcharhinus: karcharos (Gr.), sharp or jagged; rhinus, an ancient name for sharks, from rhine (Gr.), rasp, both words alluding to a shark's jagged, rasp-like skin. ( See ETYFish); longimanus: longus (L.), long; manus (L.) hand, referring to its long paddle-like pectoral fins. ( See ETYFish). More on author: Poey .
