    The Indo-Pacific swimming crab, Charybdis hellerii, is long-established in the Eastern Mediterranean and has recently colonized a very wide range in the Western Atlantic. Owing to its small size, it is unlikely to become a sought-after fisheries item.

    Charybdis hellerii has a native range which encompasses the Indo-Pacific region from the Red Sea and the east coast of Africa south to South Africa, east through the Indian Ocean and into the western Pacific north to Japan and south to eastern Australia. The type specimen was taken in New Caledonia.
    In Guam, C. hellerii is considered cryptogenic (Paulay et al. 2003). The Indo-Pacific swimming crab, Charybdis hellerii, has a hexagonal carpace with a width roughly 1.4 X the length. The font of the carapace bears six lateral teeth between the eyes, with six large anterolateral teeth on each side.
