Gymnodinium microreticulatum, Gymnodinium nolleri, Gymnodinium uberrium, Diplopsalis spp. Gymnodinium catenatum is a toxic, bloom forming species of microalgae. It is usually seen in long, swimming chains of tiny cells, with up to 32 cells in a chain (occasionally 64). It is also seen as solitary cells with a green-brown colour.
Among them, many unarmoured dinoflagellates have been classified into the genus Gymnodinium F. Stein, established by Stein [ 20 ], which originally consisted of gymnodinioid species with a cingulum displacement less than 20% of the cell length [ 21 ], and was one of the largest dinoflagellate genera [ 22 ].
