Kyphosus sectatrix has a circumglobal distribution and is found in the warmer areas of all the world's oceans. In the eastern Atlantic Ocean it has been recorded from St Helena and Ascension Island the Azores, the Canary Islands, it has been reported from the Algarve in Portugal and there are records from the Mediterranean.
Subfamily groupings of Kyphosidae should be abandoned. No support was found for Atlantic endemic species of Kyphosus. Sea chubs of the family Kyphosidae are major consumers of macroalgae on both temperate and tropical reefs, where they can comprise a significant proportion of fish biomass.
Relationships, taxonomy and distribution of all known species of Kyphosus is resolved. Testing of various topologies supports Scorpididae as the sister group to Kyphosidae. Subfamily groupings of Kyphosidae should be abandoned. No support was found for Atlantic endemic species of Kyphosus.
