In Latin, the species is called 'cruciger', meaning 'cross-bearing', since the black and white coloration on the back of the animal appears to be a cross from above. This small and robust dolphin has a stocky and short body. The dolphin has a large dorsal fin. In addition, the tail of the animal often seems to be keeled.
The scientific name cruciger means "cross-carrier" and refers to the area of black coloration, which, viewed from above, vaguely resembles a Maltese cross or cross pattée. There have been no verified sightings of calves and their coloration remains unknown. In its usual range the dolphin is easily identifiable.
They commonly bow-ride ships, especially in rough weather. They often leap from the sea, porpoise like penguins, and have been observed to spin. They especially seem to enjoy wave surfing during very high seas. The name Delphinus cruciger was based on a drawing from a sighting in the South Pacific in 1820.
