The taxonomy of one of the most common intertidal Indo-West Pacifi c xanthid crab species, Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) has generally been regarded as stable and most recent syntheses do not question its identity (e.g., Serène, 1984).
Leptodius exaratus was first described by Milne Edwards ( 1834) as Chlorodius exaratus based on specimens collected in the Indian subcontinent, the exact location of the type specimen being unknown. Leptodius exaratus sensu lato has a wide distribution in the warmer regions of the Indo-Pacific (Sakai 1976; Lee et al. 2013 ).
The xanthid Leptodius exaratus (H. Milne Edwards, 1834) inhabits tropical and subtropical rocky shores across the western Indo-West Pacific ( Lee et al., 2013) including the Persian Gulf ( Naderloo & Türkay, 2012; Afkhami et al., 2016; Naderloo, 2017 ).
Its sister species, Leptodius affinis (De stages, and reaches its megalopa stage after about two weeks (Fielder et al., From the megalopa to the adult stage about 13 ecdyses are required (Lwin 2007). For L. exaratus, only the description of the first zoal stage is available the coast of Mozambique (Clark & Paula, 2003). (Naderloo & Türkay, 2012).
