Macrophthalmus latreillei, a Pleistocene sentinel crab from northern Australia. Macrophthalmus is a genus of crabs which are widespread across the Indo-Pacific. It contains the following species (arranged into subgenera ): Macrophthalmus laevis A. Milne-Edwards, 1867 ^ M. A. Pancucci-Papadopoulou; M. Corsini-Foka & M. Naletaki (2010).
Allocleaning has been observed in all studied species of the genus Macrophthalmus, except for the most basal species, M. latifrons ( Fig. 2 ). The most parsimonious explanation accounting for the current distribution of allocleaning behaviour inferred a single origin early in the history of the lineage.
The species of subgenus Macrophthalmus tend to show low burrow fidelity and frequently wander about on the flats (J. Kitaura, pers. observ.), such wandering crabs usually hiding their bodies completely below the substrate instead of retreating to a burrow in an emergency.
Social functions in other species of Macrophthalmus have not yet been examined, although allocleaning has been observed frequently in the field during male courtship and fighting acts in a number of Macrophthalmus species (J. Kitaura, pers. observ.).
