Menippe mercenaria is first reported from the Upper Pliocene-Lower Pleistocene Caloosahatchee Formation of southern Florida, where it occurs with M. nodifrons ( Portell & Agnew, 2004) ( Table 2 ). The Upper Pleistocene Fort Thompson Formation yields abundant, well-preserved articulated M. mercenaria ( Portell & Schindler, 1991 ).
Assumes body mass of 0.45 kg ( Cline, Hardwick & Angus, 1992 ). Menippe mercenaria can generate crushing forces of at least 380 N at the tip of the dactyl ( Blundon, 1988 ), with some estimates of force production as high as 1500 N ( Whitenack & Herbert, 2015) ( Table 1 ).
The genus Menippe De Haan, 1833 [family Oziidae; subfamily Menippinae ( Karasawa & Schweitzer, 2006 )] first occurs in the fossil record in the Eocene Castle Hayne Limestone of North Carolina ( Rathbun, 1935; Blow & Manning, 1997; Karasawa & Schweitzer, 2006 ).
