The mouthparts of Metanephrops armatus and M. formosanus in the present study are similar to those of the Norwegian lobster N. norvegicus as described by Farmer (1974), which utilizes a wide range of food resources ( Cristo and Cartes, 1998, Sarda and Valladares, 1990) and is able to function as a scavenger as well as a predator.
Metanephrops neptunus, which is considered as the most derived species in the morphological analysis, is not grouped with the other species of the arafurensis group but rather shown to be one of the basal species (i.e., with M. challengeri) in the 16S rRNA gene tree ( Fig. 1 ).
Most members of Metanephrops occur in the Indo-West Pacific, and no species (including fossil) has been found in eastern Australia, East Atlantic, and central or eastern Pacific.
As M. neptunus is the most aberrant species of the genus and also is distributed in the Southern Hemisphere, it could be an early offshoot in the evolution of Metanephrops that has now retreated to the deep-sea.
