Mustelus schmitti Springer, 1939 is an endemic species of South America distributed along the Southwest Atlantic from Southern Brazil (22°S) to Argentina (47°S). It is a benthic-demersal species that represents one of the predominant elasmobranchs on the northern coast of the Argentinian sea (Buenos Aires) and Central Patagonia.
The relationship of body weight and total length (L T) of Mustelus schmitti in southern Patagonia was different between sexes. Changes in maturity stages in males appear at larger sizes in Ría Deseado specimens than in the Mar del Plata area. Mature females ranged from 795 to 913 mm while all male specimens >759 mm L T were mature.
Mustelus schmitti individuals were collected as by-catch from Patagonian shrimp trawling vessels which operate in provincial jurisdictional waters (from 43°S to 44°56′S and from the coast up to 12 miles offshore) and adjacent waters under national jurisdiction.
Mustelus schmitti were collected in 719 bottom trawl sets (40.3 m footrope, 35.3 m headrope, 103 mm codend mesh size, 22 mm intranet mesh size, 7.4 km h −1 average trawl speed, 15 min trawl duration; Table 1 and Fig. 2 ). M. schmitti were binned by sex and TL.
