This genus encompasses seven currently accepted species, four of which occur in the Atlantic: Nematoscelis megalops G.O. Sars, 1883, Nematoscelis microps G.O. Sars, 1883, Nematoscelis tenella G.O. Sars, 1883, and N. atlantica Hansen, 1910 ( Mauchline and Fisher, 1969; Gopalakrishnan, 1974 ).
In addition to similar geographic ranges, N. microps, N. tenella, and N. atlantica have similar ecological characteristics: they are mesopelagic, migrate diurnally, and feed on the same prey ( Brinton et al., 2000 ). There is morphological evidence for a hidden biodiversity within the “ N. microps ” species group.
Recent systematics of Euphausiidae considers Nematoscelis as belonging to the subfamily Nematoscelinae ( Vereshchaka et al ., 2019 ). We used Stylocheiron maximum from the same subfamily as the outgroup. COI and H3 sequences were analysed as separate and concatenated datasets.
Nematoscelis megalops belonging to the “ N. megalops ” species group ( Hansen, 1911, Mauchline, 1967; Vereshchaka et al ., 2019) was recorded in the epi- and mesopelagic of two separate latitudinal ranges in the Atlantic: 20–68°N and 22–50°S.
