Oithona simplex Spatial of representative species abundance with isobaths shown in gray. The circles are proportional in diameter to square root value of abundance. Copepods collected vertically with plankton net (200 µm mesh aperture) from a depth near the bottom to the surface in autumn 2000 (18 October to 21 November). Body length (mm): 0.37.
Other dominant Oithona species were Oithona brevicornis, Oithona simplex, and Oithona nana, accounting for 16.7–25.0%, 4.9–13.7%, and 5.5–8.5%, respectively of the total Oithona adults at the three stations. These Oithona species did not occur in low water temperatures (Fig. 5 ).
Oithona brevicornis occurred above 12 °C, mainly in November and December. Oithona simplex occurred above 15 °C, mainly in October–December. Oithona nana also occurred above 15 °C, but there was no clear trend in terms of the appearance month (Online resource 1).
This species is classified as a “eutrophic neritic group” and is the dominant copepod in terms of abundance throughout the year in such inner bay areas (Ueda 1991 ). In contrast, the abundance of O. davisae was low in Harima-Nada, with abundance of Oithona adults of 2.7% even at the coastal station H2, and less than 2% at the other two stations.
