Paracalanus tropicus has very short urosome segments and as such a high P:U ratio. Paracalanus indicus, Paracalanus parvus, and Paracalanus quasimodo are distinguished by differences in the serration of the distal outer edge of the Exp3 of the P2-P4. P. parvus has a vaulted forehead, while a dorsalic hump on the prosome is present in P. quasimodo.
The marine copepod Paracalanus parvus has long been considered the most abundant representative of the genus and one of the main components of coastal zooplankton in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. However, subtle morphological differences between P. parvus, P. indicus and P. quasimodo hamper correct taxonomic identification.
Nevertheless, the species involved in that study ( P. tropicus, P. indicus, P. nanus and the undescribed Paracalanus sp. A) were not phylogenetically as close as P. indicus and P. quasimodo, which theoretically could more easily hybridize.
