This is the type species of the genus. This species may be conspecific with Pecten jacobaeus, the pilgrim's scallop, which has a much more restricted distribution. The shell of Pecten maximus is quite robust and is characterised by having "ears" of equal size on either side of the apex.
Pecten maximus occurs in the eastern Atlantic along the European coast from northern Norway, south to the Iberian peninsula, it has also been reported off West Africa, off the Macaronesian Islands. In Great Britain and Ireland it is distributed all round the coast but it is uncommon and localised on the eastern North Sea coast.
Minchin (2003) states that the maximum age for Pecten maximus is about 22 years. In reality however, especially in heavily fished areas, the average age or size is reduced and those caught commercially rarely exceed 16 cm (Minchin, 2003). The rate of natural mortality is low at 10-15% for adult Pecten maximus (Rees & Dare, 1993).
The demand for Pecten maximus (L.) spat to replace stocks depleted by intensive fishing or to establish new fishing sites has led both to the collection of natural offspring and to laboratory culture ( Le Pennec, 1974; Buestel et al ., 1982 ).
