It has been repeatedly noted in the literature that Pelagobia aggr. longicirrata is traditionally considered cosmopolitan; however, morphological descriptions of specimens from different authors vary.
By the original description, P. viguieri “clearly separates from Pelagobia longocirrata Greeff by the relatively longer tentacular cirri of the first segment and the parapodial cirri of the other segments, by the different shape of chaetae, by the larger number of segments, by the extent of the nuchal organs” (Gravier 1911 ).
Pelagobia cf. longicirrata from the Drake Passage (GenBank sequences) form a heterogeneous cluster; it is noteworthy that acicular structures within tentacular cirri were reported for some of these specimens (Isaychev et al. 2013; Isaychev 2021 pers. comm.). Unfortunately, we cannot check these specimens, because they’re lost.
Pelagobia albertych sp. nov. distinctly differs from all known Pelagobia species by the very unusual shape of nuchal organs, having two pairs of long filiform appendages on nuchal lappets. It also differs from P. serrata Southern, 1909 by its non-serrated chaetal shafts (Southern 1909; Ushakov 1972; Isaychev et al. 2012).
