Other impacts, such as pollution, entanglement, and direct killing, are not thought to be significant. Phocarctos hookeri (Gray, 1844) is named in honor of Sir James Hooker, who was the botanist with the British Antarctic expedition of 1839–1843. It is monotypic and is one of the world's seven extant sea lions.
They are the only species of the genus Phocarctos. The main breeding populations are at the Auckland and Campbell Islands in the New Zealand subantarctic, where approximately 99% of the species' annual pup production occurs. There are currently three functioning breeding rookeries on the Auckland Islands.
While the pristine breeding range of P. hookeri included almost all New Zealand coastal, island, and subantarctic territory, a combination of subsistence hunting by Maori and commercial sealing by Europeans have virtually reduced the current breeding range to two groups of subantarctic islands.
