The first Pholoe species described was P. inornata. Johnston (1839) collected it fromBerwick Bay, Northumberland, England (UK) and erected the genus Pholoe for it.
Species names assigned by Gonzalez et al. (2017) were Pholoe sp. A and sp. B, respectively. With the Gulf of Naples being the type locality of P. synophthalmica, a junior synonym ofP. inornata, it might be possible that specimen KW447 belongs to a genetically distant population of P. inornata or to a species close to P. inornata.
With the new results presented herein, the assessment of the conclusions from Meißner et al. (2017) is possible. This former study had inferred the occurrence ofat least seven potential Pholoe spp. in the northern regions of the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic Oceans.
Figure 8. Phylogeny of Pholoe based on thecombined dataset of COI, 16S rDNA, ITS2 and 28S rDNA. Terminals were selected so that all different haplotypes of COI were included. When more than one specimen was available for a single haplotype, the specimen with most additional molecular data was selected.
