Phronima species live in the pelagic zone of the deep ocean. Their bodies are semitransparent. Although commonly known as parasites, they are more technically correctly called parasitoids. Instead of constantly feeding on a live host, females attack salps, using their mouths and claws to eat the animal and hollow out its gelatinous shell.

This tiny, shrimplike creature is no more than 2.5 centimeters (1 inch) long, but it’s as ferocious as a shark. Its giant eyes spot prey. Huge claws grab the prey, and a tiny mouth rips it to shreds. The prey never sees what’s coming, because Phronima’s transparent body blends into the surrounding water.
This being the case, Phronima should really be considered as a parasitoid rather than a parasite. As for the energy involved in carrying around this barrel, the structure’s size and shape actually enables the Phronima to be more buoyant in the water. Some energy is still required to carry this jelly barrel.
Phronima has broken free of the sea floor, taking advantage of another sea creature, the salp, to survive in the open water. Salps are barrel-shaped, gelatinous zooplankton which drift throughout our oceans. They may occur individually or in huge chains composed of individual salps linked together.
