One of the most well-studied species, Phylliroe bucephala, lives a pretty odd life indeed. Adults of this species have relatively few young, only about 240 eggs–a small number for nudibranchs. Worse still, young P. bucephala prey on a single species of jellyfish.
The two Phylliroe bucephala samples included in our analysis form a clade (bootstrap support (BS) = 100, posterior probability (PP) = 1.0) within Dendronotida sensu stricto and are sister to a clade containing Melibe (Tethyidae) and Scyllaea (Scyllaeidae) (BS = 99, PP = 1.0).
Development has only been investigated in one species, Phylliroe bucephala Lamarck, 1816, whose veliger larvae and juveniles exhibit brood parasitism within the bell of the hydromedusa Zanclea costata Gegenbaur, 1857, and feed on the ring and radial canals and manubrium of the animal.
The authors would like to thank Maik Scherholz (former student with HW at ZFMK) who compiled much of the morphological data for the Dendronotida s.l., Steve Haddock and Lynne Christianson of MBARI for access to a tissue sample for Phylliroe bucephala, and Karen Cheney of the University of Queensland for the sample of Pteraeolidia ianthina.
