When it grows in fast-flowing, shallow water, Porites astreoides is encrusting but in calmer water at medium depths it is a massive coral with a smooth, mounded, semi-spherical form and can grow to 60 centimetres (24 in) … See more

Though P. astreoides has become a ubiquitous species, one of the most prolific in the Atlantic, it is certainly not immune to the anthropogenic changes occurring in the world’s oceans. Porites astreoides faces similar settlement, competitive, physiological, and environmental challenges as other tropical scleractinean coral species in the Atlantic.
    P. astreoides is commonly found alongside other currently abundant species in the Caribbean such as: Sidastrea radians, Orbicella annularis, Madracis sp., and Agaricia agaricites [ 45, 91 ]. Porites astreoides has been shown to be positively associated with massive corals and negatively associated with branching coral species [ 8 ].
Porites astreoides is considered a resilient shallow-water species as it has become one of the most abundant coral species in the Caribbean and is now responsible for a majority of carbonate production on many reefs [ 4, 9, 10 ].
