Etymology: Schroederichthys: In honor of American ichthyologist William C. Schroeder (1895-1977), Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, for his pioneering work (with Henry B. Bigelow) on cartilaginous fishes; ichthyos (Gr.), fish. ( See ETYFish); tenuis: Latin for thin, referring to its slender body. ( See ETYFish).
Soto (2001) described the fifth species of Schroederichthys, S. saurisqualus, distinguishing it from the congeners mainly by body proportions, vertebrae counts and color pattern. The author also presented some illustrations and brief descriptions of dermal denticles, teeth, claspers and egg capsules.
Springer (1966) originally proposed Schroederichthys to allocate S. maculatus (type-species) and S. tenuis based on their elongated postpelvic trunk region, well-developed labial furrows and color pattern.
These small-sized sharks are restricted to temperate and tropical waters of South and Central America ( Compagno 1984; 1988 ). Recently, the genus Schroederichthys was reassigned to the family Atelomycteridae based on a combined phylogeny including morphological data and NADH2 sequences ( Soares and Mathubara 2022 ).
