    In the north-western Atlantic the landings comprise a mixture of three species ( Sebastes marinus, S. fasciatus, and S. mentella ), but only S. mentella is a truly deep-water species. Because the landings are not separated into species, it is impossible to assess the importance of the deep-water component of the catch.
    Sebastes marinus is a large, robust member of the scorpionfish family that may reach up to 1 m in length although is usually about half that size. Like similar species it has relatively large and tall fins including an almost truncate tail fin, rounded anal, pectoral and pelvic fins, and a continuous dorsal fin.
