In the north-western Atlantic the landings comprise a mixture of three species ( Sebastes marinus, S. fasciatus, and S. mentella ), but only S. mentella is a truly deep-water species. Because the landings are not separated into species, it is impossible to assess the importance of the deep-water component of the catch.
Sebastes marinus is a large, robust member of the scorpionfish family that may reach up to 1 m in length although is usually about half that size. Like similar species it has relatively large and tall fins including an almost truncate tail fin, rounded anal, pectoral and pelvic fins, and a continuous dorsal fin.
Sebastes norvegicus is a large and stocky bodied species of rockfish. Like other scorpionfishes this species has comparatively large fins which have long spines and rays. The caudal fin is weakly truncate while the anal, pectoral and pelvic fins are rounded and the dorsal fin is continuous.
Von Seydlitz (1962) reported on higher catches of Sebastes marinus during daytime than at night. Schooling behavior also shows a daily pattern. For example, Steven (1959) noted that schools of Hepsitia stipes and Bathystoma rimator disperse at night and that these fish show an activity increase with decreasing illumination.
