Sepiella japonica (Mollusca, Cephalopoda, Decapoda, Sepiidae, Sepiella) is a common species of cuttlefish, largely distributed across the coastal waters of China, Japan and Indonesia as well as in many parts of the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea ( Liu et al., 2019 ).
Spawning occurs as early as day 120. The amount of spawned eggs is 300–500 per individual. Sepiella japonica Sasaki, 1929 belongs to Family Sepiidae.
In the East China Sea, S. japonica is one of the most important harvested aquatic species because it is relatively easy to culture and lays large eggs with direct embryo development and high hatchling survival rates (Pascual 1978; Forsythe et al. 1994; Domingues et al. 2000 ).
The major stocks of S. japonica live in warm water. Fishing season comes earlier in the south than in the north: February–March in Guangdong and Fujian provinces in the South China Sea, April–June in Zhejiang Province in the East China Sea and June–July in Shandong Province in the Yellow Sea.
