Kahl (1932) described a species collected from marine sand in Kiel Bay, Germany, and identified it as an unknown species of Strombidium. Maeda and Carey (1985) named the form Strombidium kielum. Xu et al. (2011) redescribed this species and revealed its unique ciliary pattern, based on which they established the genus Varistrombidium.
This is consistent with findings in other geographic regions such as the northwest and south Atlantic Ocean, the Baltic Sea, and the Mediterranean Sea, where Strombidium is also the strombidiid genus represented by the largest number of species ( Dolan and Marrasé, 1995; Santoferrara and Alder, 2009; Agatha, 2011 ).
This species is very similar to Strombidium crassulumbut differs in the shape of the membranelles of the adoral zone and the body size. The polysaccharide plate is striped but specimens without stripes were also described. The macronucleus is oval. A rare species from the North Sea. (ref. ID; 3420) Comments
Strombidium pseudorapulum sp. n. clusters together with those species having ‘eyespot’ in apical protrusion in the phylogenetic tree based on the small subunit rRNA gene sequence. It is a sister species of S. cuneiforme with 31 unmatched nucleotides between their SSU rRNA gene sequences.
