Acta Protozool. 2010 Nov 15; 49 (3): 213–234. Tintinnopsis parvula Jörgensen, 1912 has apparently a cosmopolitan distribution in the pelagial of marine and brackish coastal waters. The species is redescribed based on material from the Irish Sea off the Isle of Man, using live observation, protargol impregnation, and scanning electron microscopy.
Tintinnopsis parvula can be distinguished from T. beroidea by having an inflated bowl (vs. widest portion of lorica is the opening) and a conspicuous (vs. inconspicuous) constriction between the collar and the bowl ( Jörgensen, 1912 ).
Tintinnopsis parvula, Irish Sea specimens in the scanning electron microscope. 55-57-lateral views of loricae. The loricae are composed of a usually broadly obovate bowl and a cylindroidal collar.
Tintinnopsis parvula, specimens from the North Sea in vivo (81) and from the polder basins after Lugol-fixation (82–89). 81 – lateral view of a swimming specimen; 82–88 – variability of the lorica shape and size; 89 – abundances [ind. l −1] at different salinities [‰] and temperatures [°C] in the polder basins (after Agatha 1995 ).
