Several studies have documented the occurrence of hyperostosis, a bone condition that results in bone thickening, in specimens of Trichiurus lepturus, an important commercial species. A total of 102 Largehead Hairtail fish samples from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, were obtained from artisanal fishers and divided into 4 size classes.
Specimens of Trichiurus lepturus (102 individuals—40 males, 43 females, and 19 of indeterminate sex) were purchased from artisanal fishermen from two different estuaries—Guanabara Bay and Sepetiba Bay—in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The specimens were sexed and biometric measurements regarding total length (TL in mm) and weight (in grams) were taken.
Hyperostosis occurred in 69.60% of the specimens analyzed, occurring in five different skeletal regions: Supraoccipital crest (SOC) and Frontal (FRO)—grouped in Cranial (CR) category, Cleithrum (CL); Dorsal fin Pterygiophores (DP) and Haemal Spines (HS). Individuals of Trichiurus lepturus analyzed ranged from 184 to 1093 mm in TL.
    T. lepturus growth was described by the von Bertalanffy growth function parameters L ∝ = 74.89 cm PL, K = 0.13yr −1 and t0 = −0.80 yr, with the L ∝ being amongst the largest reported for the species. Growth was variable, with the sizes at any given age spanning up to 50 cm PL.
