Actiniaria is one of the most successful and diverse taxa of Anthozoa. Sea anemones can be found in all marine habitats, depths and latitudes despite its body simplicity (Daly et al. 2008 ). The group comprises 48 families, 269 valid genera and more than 1000 species (Daly et al. 2007; Fautin 2013 ).
Sea anemones, order Actiniaria, are classified in the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia. Rodriguez et al. proposed a new classification for the Actiniaria based on extensive DNA results. Suborders and superfamilies included in Actiniaria are:

Such diversity is also reflected in the chemical’s production where compounds have been studied and isolated from sea anemones (Rodriguez et al. 2014b ). Therefore, the order Actiniaria has an important part in biotechnology and great value for functional ecology studies, considering its role on the ecosystems’ dynamics where they are present.
Within the crown Hexacorallia clade, Actiniaria (exclusive of Boloceroides daphneae) is sister to all other ordinal-level lineages. Scleractinia and Corallimorpharia group together in a well-supported, monophyletic clade; this clade is sister to a clade containing Antipatharia, Zoanthidea, and B. daphneae.
