Archaeogastropoda (also known as Aspidobranchia ) was a taxonomic order of sea snails used in older classifications of gastropods, i.e. snails and slugs.
The Archaeogastropoda are one of the most abundant orders of the Paleozoic, but they have received surprizingly little systematic analysis. I have conducted a cladistic analysis of archaeogastropod species appearing during the initial radiation of the clade during the latest Cambrian through the Ordovician. The analysis included over 100 species.
The archaeogastropods were the dominant group of the Palaeozoic gastropods and unite many extinct taxa and taxa with hitherto unknown relationships to the living archaeogastropods (Fig. 17 ). The ancestors of the clade Patellogastropoda should be sought amongst these gastropods.
The archaeogastropod protoconch (Fig. 4a, b, g) is formed by nearly one whorl (Bandel 1982; Sasaki 1998; Hickman 1988, 1992 ). The protoconch is initially organic and egg-shaped, then it is spirally deformed and finally mineralized (Bandel 1982; Hickman 1992, but see also Page 1997 ).
