Cerastoderma glaucum is one of the most common macrobenthos species that jointly affect the benthic ecosystem processes in Lake Qarun [ Citation 21–23 ]. The annual average weight (AAW) of C. glaucum fluctuated between 0.440 and 0.845 g in 1989−2000, and between 0.115 and 0.261 g in 2006−2013 [ Citation 20 ].
However, Cerastoderma edule and Cerastoderma glaucum may be found together (sympatric), where stable sediments and good food availability occur e.g., Zostera sp. covered silt banks (Boyden & Russell, 1972; Brock, 1979).
Montaudouin & Bachelet (1995) reported highest juvenile growth rates at low density (160-200 adults /m²) whereas adult growth rates were only depressed at the highest density examined (2000 adults/m²). Cerastoderma edule is unable to acclimatise to low temperatures, resulting in reduced metabolic rate and oxygen consumption during winter months.
