    Charybdis feriatus is a common crab species consumed as seafood throughout its geographical range extending from Japan to the east coast of Africa. 29 Many other species of the same genus are also of commercial importance.
    Charybdis feriata is native to the tropical and subtropical western Indo-Pacific region. Its range extends from East Africa, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf to Japan, Indonesia and Australia. It is uncommon in Australia but is harvested commercially in parts of its range such as India.
    The closer haplotype is a COI sequence of a specimen from Australia (MN 184690), with differences in two positions (99.68 % similarity), ranging between 98.65 to 97.30 % of similarity (seven to 14 mutations) with respect to the rest of 60 haplotypes for this species in Genbank. Charybdis feriata (Linnaeus, 1758) in GBIF Secretariat (2023).
    Charybdis feriata inhabits shallow water, on both rocks and sandy bottoms. Mating takes place between a hard-shelled male crab and a soft-shelled, freshly-moulted female crab. The male takes up a guarding "cradle" position before the female moults, straddling her and gripping her with his ambulatory legs.
