Foraminifera are essentially marine- and estuarine-dwelling protozoans living in all environments from the greatest depths right up to highest astronomical tide level and from the equator to the poles. The importance of foraminifera comes from the use of their fossil tests in biostratigraphy, paleoenvironmental studies, and isotope geochemistry.
Here, we show the response of marine benthic foraminifera to the early Oligocene climatic changes at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Hole 1138A of the Southern Ocean (Indian Sector). We made use of the diversity parameters, the relative abundance of dominant benthic foraminifera, and isotopic data to understand past oceanographic changes.
Planktonic foraminifera are marine zooplankton that are globally ubiquitous in the near-surface ocean 5. They build calcite shells, which upon death of the organisms, sink and, are, under the right conditions preserved in seafloor sediments.
While the majority of confident classifications were for benthic foraminifera with complete or partially-damaged shells, on occasion classifications could be made from fragmentary pieces of shell (see Usage Notes for suggestions on how to filter out these specimens when using morphometrics data).
