Heterobranchia, the heterobranchs (meaning "different-gilled snails"), is a taxonomic clade of snails and slugs, which includes marine, aquatic and terrestrial gastropod mollusks . Heterobranchia is one of the main clades of gastropods.
Lower Heterobranchia, also known as the Allogastropoda, is a group of rather specialized, highly evolved sea slugs and sea snails, ( marine gastropod mollusks) within the subclass Heterobranchia. Although the great majority of Lower Heterobranchs are indeed marine, a few have succeeded in making the transition to freshwater .
Almost every clade within Heterobranchia has been subject to significant and continued taxonomic revision. The name Heterobranchia was coined by Burmeister (1837), but it is most commonly attributed to Gray (1840) who used it to unite Opisthobranchia (e.g., sea slugs) and Pulmonata (e.g., land snails).
Earlier authors (such as J.E. Gray, 1840) considered Heterobranchia to consist of only marine gastropods, and conceptualized it as a borderline category, intermediate between the Opisthobranchia & Pulmonata, and all the other gastropods.
