Hexacorallia is a class of Anthozoa comprising approximately 4,300 species of aquatic organisms formed of polyps, generally with 6-fold symmetry. It includes all of the stony corals, most of which are colonial and reef-forming, as well as all sea anemones, and zoanthids, arranged within five extant orders. The … See more

Subclass Hexacorallia (= Zoantharia) of cnidarian class Anthozoa currently contains six orders: Actiniaria (sea anemones), Antipatharia (black corals), Ceriantharia (tube anemones), Scleractinia (stony corals), Corallimorpharia (corallimorpharians), and Zoanthidea (zoanthids).
The phylogeny supports reciprocally monophyletic Hexacorallia and Octocorallia, with Ceriantharia as the earliest diverging hexacorals; two reciprocally monophyletic clades of Octocorallia; and monophyly of all hexacoral orders with the exception of the enigmatic sea anemone Relicanthus daphneae.
A total of 236 coral colonies were sampled from 32 scleractinian and 4 cnidarian outgroup taxa representing both the Hexacorallia and Octocorallia (Supplementary Data 1 ). Hexacorallia (anemones, corallimorpharians, zoanthids and scleractinian corals) and Octocorallia (gorgonians) are both monophyletic groups within class Anthozoa.
