Megasporogenesis, megagametogenesis and embryogenesis of Liparis elliptica (family Orchidaceae, tribe Malaxideae, subtribe Malaxidinae) have been studied. It was shown that the L. elliptica embryo sac is monosporic and develops from the chalazal cell of the megaspore triad according to the modified Polygonum type.
Classification within the genus Liparis s.l., along with molecular studies, involves vegetative and generative characters, such as the structure of leaves (Cameron 2005 ), pseudobulbs (Kumar et al. 2021 ), and inflorescences (Margońska et al. 2012 ), as well as preference for certain growth substrates (Cameron 2005; Li et al. 2020 ).
    L. elliptica is widely distributed in Nepal, India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Indochina, China to Southeast Asia including Philippines, Malaysia (also Borneo), Indonesia (Borneo, Java, New Guinea), Papua New Guinea, Oceania (Margońska et al. 2022 ). Liparis L.C.Rich. is the largest genus in the subtribe Malaxidinae.
Modern molecular studies have shown that the genus Liparis is polyphyletic. It includes two main edaphic groups: terrestrial and epiphytic (Cameron 2005; Li and Yan 2013; Tang et al. 2015 ). Genus Liparis s.s. has been limited to temperate terrestrial orchids (Pridgeon et al. 2005 ).
