In this study we examine the propulsion of Liriope tetraphylla (Chamisso and Eysenhardt, 1821) throughout its development. L. tetraphylla, formerly assigned to the trachymedusan family Geryoniidae, appears to be better assigned as a limnomedusan in the family Olindiasidae ( Collins et al., 2008; Collins, 2009 ).
Liriope tetraphylla does not have a polyp stage. Its medusae are always present. This hydrozoan is known to occur in the North Sea, North, East, and West South Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean, and in the Indo-Pacific Oceans. It is also known to occur in the English Channel, being carried there by currents from the Atlantic Ocean.
Individual medusae of Liriope tetraphylla were collected by hand from surface waters adjacent to the Centro de Biologia Marinha (CEBIMar-USP), Universidade de São Paulo, São Sebastião, Brazil. Medusae were immediately transported to the laboratory and kept in tanks at room temperature (20 °C) filled with filtered seawater.
