A test of this kind has been described also for Nematomenia and Proneomenia by Pruvot (I890, 1892), for Halomenia by Heath (1918) and for the protobranch bivalves Nucula and Yoldia by Drew (1899, 190I).
Pruvot's (1890) figure of a newly metamorphosed juvenile of Nematomenia, although based on observations on a single individual, has been widely reproduced in general works (Dawydoff 1928; Korschelt & Heider i900oo; Lang I896; Pelseneer i906). This single post-larva according to Pruvot bore on its dorsal surface seven overlapping calcareous plates.
Larvae of Neomenia are at no time negatively geotactic and always swim within a centimetre or two of the bottom of a culture vessel. As development proceeds they spend an increasing proportion of the time resting on the bottom. No evidence of photosensitivity could be obtained. The larvae were not seen to feed.
