Scyphomedusae (class Scyphozoa) are exclusively marine organisms divided into two monophyletic lineages: Coronatae Vanhöffen, 1892 (= Coronamedusae, 59 spp.) and Discomedusae (172 spp.) 10. Discomedusae is composed of "Semaeostomeae" L. Agassiz, 1862 (84 spp.) and Rhizostomeae Cuvier, 1800 (88 spp.) 11.
Most fall into a few major taxonomic groups. Scyphozoans – This class contains the larger jellyfish varieties that are more familiar to beachgoers, like the moon jellyfish (Aurelia). With rounded bells and long dangling oral arms and tentacles, scyphozoan jellyfish resemble colorful gooey umbrellas pulsing through the seas.
Within Scyphozoa, the rhizostome C. xamachana shows a similar neural architecture as the semaeostomean planula of Aurelia aurita. The latter also possesses FMRFa-LIR sensory lateral neurons, which are associated with an aborally concentrated neural plexus at the base of the ectoderm ( Nakanishi et al., 2008 ).
The initial medusa stage of Scyphozoa, the ephyra, is morphologically similar among the different lineages within the class 14, 15.
