Synaphobranchid eels (Anguilliformes: Synaphobranchidae), a significant world-wide member of the deep-sea ecosystem (Robins and Robins 1989; Sulak and Shcherbachev 1997 ), are currently included in three subfamilies (Simenchelyinae, Synaphobranchinae and Ilyophinae) with 37 valid species in 12 genera (Robins and Robins 1989; Melo 2007 ).
The new synaphobranchid eel Ilyophis singularis is described on the basis of two specimens (248–270 mm in total length) collected from the northeastern South China Sea at a depth between 1,612 and 1,665 m.
Although some of these possibly “endemic” species may be found in adjacent waters in the future, it appears that the South China Sea has a more or less unique synaphobranchid fauna, perhaps related to the paleogeography of the region, as has been suggested for the coastal fishes (Muto et al. 2021 ).
Supraorbital pores 3, all on anterior part of snout (absent above eye). Infraorbital pores 7 or 8 (8 on right side of holotype), one just posterodorsal to anterior nostril, 4 in straight line along upper jaw, and 2 or 3 (3 on right side of holotype) aligned vertically behind eye.
