In the Mediterranean Sea, the two sponges of the genus Aplysina ( A. aerophoba and A. cavernicola) are identified on the basis of their external morphology and the environment in which they live.
The Aplysiidae are herbivorous, eating a variety of red, green or brown algae and eelgrass. Their color is diet-derived from the pigments of the algae. They concentrate the toxins found on algae. Some species spout ink when disturbed or attacked, and they may also swim (rather than crawl) away, using their broad wing-like flaps or parapodia.

The two Mediterranean species of the Aplysinidae family, Aplysina aerophoba (Nardo 1833) and A. cavernicola (Vacelet 1959 ), are separated on the base of the external morphology and, in particular, surface texture, shape of digitations, presence of lateral projections and pigmentation of living specimens.
